RSVP Invitations

What does RSVP (or RVSP) mean?

RSVP sometimes mistakenly written as RVSP, is found at the end of most formal invitations, especially, if it’s an rvsp for a wedding invitation. But what do the letters stand for, and where did the abbreviation originate?

replyas soon is very possibleRSVP is an abbreviation in French for "répondez s'il vous plaît", meaning "please respond". Not surprisingly, many American’s have forgotten where the abbreviation originated from and end up writing “Please RSVP.”  Meaning please, please respond. Try to not sound that desperate when inviting people to your party.

RVSP Etiquette
There actually is proper etiquette to adhere to when responding to RSVP Invitations. When you receive your invitation it is extremely important that you respond immediately. The whole point of the RSVP is to please respond. If HR invites you and a guest to the 2011 Christmas party, let them know if you plan to be there. They likely need a head count for the meal order.

  • Often times, the rsvp means that the number of people whom are available to attend the event will determine not only how many tables will be needed, but how much food the host will order, and sometimes even the location of the event. Don’t be rude and wait until the last minute to send in your reply.  This can cause added stress to your host, and sometimes cause them to have to completely redo the arrangement of the tables and place settings. Make everyone’s life a little easier, and RSVP right away.
  • Where to Include RSPV on Cards: If you are planning a formal dinner, event, or wedding it is always helpful to know how many people will be able to attend. But where should you place the RSVP on the card?
  • Most people find the best places to include the RVSP or RSVP on your formal invitation, is centered at the bottom of the card.  Normal RVSP’s are typically found here, especially if the invitation is for a wedding or event. Quite often, for very important events, the host will send a stamped envelope or postcard with the invitation.  This allows the guest to not only visually see the need for an RSVP, by having it on another card, but it also lets the invited guest easily respond.
  • Variations of RSVP: Pay attention to details included around the RVSP on the invitation. Sometimes the RSVP invitation will state “RVSP by a said date.” Other times, a card will read RSVP Regrets only.  This means that you should only respond if you will be unable to attend the party or event.
